Official: Green Day Biggest Sell-Out Ever
I’ve often said that Green Day was the biggest sell-out band of recent years. Unfortunately my argument fell short with some, so I typically let it slide and went on with my Green Day-free life. Finally though, I’ve gotten enough ammunition to prove without the shadow of a doubt that Green Day is no longer the the band of yore. If you go back in time, the progression from punk to pop may have even started with Dookie. Sure, they were still power chord playing, robo-trippin’ kids, but it certainly opened the door for them to jump on the pop bandwagon. At least Dookie contained no signs of mainstream to it when it first came out in the early nineties. The same couldn’t be said for Insomniac and then Nimrod, which really kicked off the descent (or ascent depending on who you talk to).
If I were to play a post-1995 album and Kerplunk! back-to-back to someone who’d never heard GD before, I’d be willing to bet they would think it was two different bands. I suppose this could be said of many bands, as they do grow and evolve as they age. To shift as drastically as we’ve seen GD though, is a complete change in the foundation of what makes a band. And thus my argument began. Tonight though, I’m safely able to make this post without fear of retribution from my peers.
Putting out crap like American Idiot, or boarding the Rock Band express (and further likening it to “being the band on-stage”) was great fuel for my fire. But turning said album into a Broadway musical and actually performing with the cast at the Grammy Awards? I could no longer sit idly by without making my stance be known. I’m sure my rantings won’t help to dissuade the naive youth who weren’t fortunate enough to have heard Green Day when they were good. If nothing else, I hope their staying power tapers off soon; my guess is it will because what’s left? Then again, I never saw a musical coming.
With that, I nominate Green Day as the biggest sell-out band ever. And now that I’ve got it off my chest, I can continue to listen to and discover new, more pleasing music for my tastes.
This is the most useless opinion ever, Greenday never set out to be an underground band where only 15 people have heard of them if you listen to 39 Smooth, you’ll see that album is just aweful
what about Weezer? they released two of the best albums of the 90s and now they’re mainly singing about going to the mall and girls getting hot.
haha, very true
wat? wat a load of shit! u clearly know non of green days work! to say insomniac was ‘mainstream’??? plus all proceeds of american idiot the musical went to charity! plus since green day made it big anonymous LARGE cheques have been sent every year to 924 gilman street (the club that helped make them) after each of green days albums were released!!! hmmmm??? wonder who that cud be?
The reason is simple, you’ve said it yourself. they ARE CHANGING.
You can’t stick to the exact same freakn type of music for all your life and then expect them to keep on making the exact same type of music and exact same type of lyrics.
‘Cause that’d be really boring.
I bet you even changed from when you where 10 and where you are now.
I bet you are listening to different music than when you where 10.
And i bet you wear different clothes, got different friends.
Just like them you change especially your taste changes.
I wrote a song once… 4 years ago. and i don’t like to play it nowadays, simply because i make different music now that fits me to the point where i am in my life right now.
Obviously, you really can’t call a band a ’sellout’ just because they’re changing and write more mature music right?
I mean come on, Green Day has been around for more than 10 years, you can’t expect them to write the same old songs they wrote in Dookie and 39/Smooth or Nimrod or all those other albums before American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. I’ve heard Green Day ever since I was young, and yes, they have changed. They’ve grown. But that does NOT put them as a ’sellout’. Get your facts right before you rant about Green Day being the biggest sellout ever.
Awesome Post Abercrombie Abercrombie and Fitch
As energy prices sky rocket the prices of solar panels will only go up. This will hopefully prove that solar panels will be a great investment for anyone wanting to save some money or help the environment. Either way, solar panels really should be at the top of the “to do” list. Someone has recommended Solar Panels so I am really looking forward to getting them.
I cannot thank you enough for the blog post.Really thank you!
It’s amazing to see the defenses that people come out with when a band of such little musical pride (if any at all) are threatened with being labeled a ’sell out’ The real problem, in my opinion, is the fans that becoming a mainstream ‘pop/punk’ band generates. As soon as you start selling out Giants stadium, not only do you get a rediculous amount of money, but you also get a horde of 14 year old girls thinking that ‘American idiots’ are responsible for the state of the world today.
Nice information, many thanks to the author. It is incomprehensible to me now, but in general, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and good luck!

Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.
are you seriously having a go at green day because they’ve changed? Either your am idiot or listen to the same band album all your life. Name bands that haven’t changed their sound at all and have been a successful as green day. Look at blink-182 ,my favourite band. There sound changed from producing albums with songs bout masturbation, and toilet humour like Chesire Cat to punk sensation Enema of the State with songs like all the small things. You cant expect a bands sound to stay the same as they grow up from late teenagers to 30 year olds.
So predictable, people not taking his opinion on board and just lashing out. Say something critical and just watch the wave of oncoming naive hate from the mainstream rock fans. Pathetic. Good post Brian by the way.
