Really? Green Day Rockband?

18 March
Author: Chavez

Recently Harmonix announced the release details of their latest iteration of Rockband……Rockband: Green Day. It will be coming out the 8th of June at full retail price. They will be getting the Beatles: Rockband treatment by getting new artwork and unlockable interviews and pictures. The only diffrence between the two band-centric games is that there will be an export option for the Green Day game.

Is this really needed?

I am a fan of these music games and have been since I knew music games even existed. I think this is starting to get a bit much. When Guitar Hero first hit the market it was still considered a niche game, until  it became an unstoppable juggernaut and the sequels came….and now they wont stop. There was a point where I was happy hearing about a Guitar Hero sequel but then I quickly saw how much they were going to milk these games for as much as they can (just like their publisher Activision likes to do). When Rockband came on to the scene, Harmonix made claims that they would treat it like a platform instead of a game so that people wouldnt have to shell out a lot of money buying yearly editions of the game and they could just buy songs for it whenever they wanted. They kept that promise for the most part…untill recently. With the details of Green Day’s game they also hinted at the 3rd Rockband game also being released by the end of this year. Is that really necessary? Two Rockband games released in the same year?

Does Green Day really need their stand alone game? My feelings of Green Day aside lets look at how many of these kind of music games were released last year alone. There is : Guitar Hero Metallica, Guitar Hero Van Halen, Band Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero On Tour Decades, Guitar Hero On Tour Modern Hits, Lego Rockband, Beatles Rockband, and Rockband Unplugged. Seems like quite a bit doesn’t it.  Adding two more games to this pile is unnecessary, especially considering Green Day has had a number of tracks already released as downloadable songs on Rockband already. Given that the last numbered Rockband game was released in 2008, it is almost forgivable that Rockband 3 would be released this year…..almost. I would have much prefered that they released this as a add-on disc like the did with AC/DC for a much cheaper price.

Lately these music games havent been producing as much money as they once did, but I doubt that releasing wayy too many titles in the same year is not the way to make more money. If anything that sort of business practice might end up making people not buy. What do you think?
