Why “Suds on Bleeker”?
Why not? Bleecker Street is a very famous street in Greenwich Village of New York City. According to Wikipedia, the street is a spine that connects a neighborhood today popular for music venues and comedy. Bleecker was also once a major center for American Bohemia. So why not try to portray this essence into a web culture?
‘Did she say we were doing laundry? Because where I come from, it’s called “doing the hibbidy-dibbidy.”‘
The “Suds” aspect actually comes from a scene from the 1999 hit movie, Big Daddy, featuring Adam Sandler. In the movie, Sonny and Layla do laundry together at a laundromat called “Suds on Bleecker”.
You realize there isn’t really a “Suds” on Bleecker, right?
We do, we must admit. We were pretty dissapopointed to find out there was not a laundromat on Bleecker Street (in New York City) by this name. But we loved the name anyway and thought it captured the essence of the site: a place to meet new people, talk and share stories, and maybe even a place to air a little dirty laundry.
It’s spelled “Bleecker Street” and not “Bleeker”!
We realize this now. While we were in NYC in October of 2009, we realized this as we happened to come across Bleecker Street. This is also the same time we confirmed there was actually not a laundromat by that name here. A dissappointing moment, for sure, but it was made better by a nice pub just a couple blocks down from where we started. We had already chosen the name, registered the domain, and made the logo; we think it’s a bit of a nice twist regardless.
I know a great bar on Bleecker that plays awesome music!

Not really. Well, some of us are, and then there are some of us who just really love Jägermeister.
