Eminem gets mature on his latest single
I’m not big into rap and hip-hop because, let’s be honest, most rappers sound like morons spitting lame rhymes about how many times they’ve been shot or how much bling they are sporting around their neck. I don’t know about you, but I can’t relate to that shit. Sure, I’ll nod my head and smile at some of these beats that are accompanied by ludicrous braggadocio, but at the end of the day, I’m really laughing more at the rapper than with them.
Now there are certainly plenty of great rappers who eschew these trite conventions, and Eminem has always been one of my favorites. His insane wordplay and knowing sense of humor are enough to draw in plenty of fans like me who don’t usually frequent the rap world. But even Eminem was starting to fall into the trap of endlessly repeating himself. I mean, how many tracks can a guy sing about how much drugs messed him up?
But after scrapping the planned follow-up to his last album Relapse, and instead starting from scratch on his new album Recovery, which is due on June 22, it seems as if Mr. Mathers is toning down the wise cracks and focusing on his own faults. On the first single, he sings, “It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me/Admittedly I probably did it subliminally for you/So I could come back a brand new me, you helped me see through.” Funny or serious, with Eminem it’s all good.
Check out the video for “Not Afraid” after the jump (and notice the not-so-subtle product placement for Dr. Dre’s Beats laptop):
Baseball season kicks off in Boston with a little Dr. Dre, Steven Tyler, and Neil Diamond
The 2010 baseball season hit the ground running last night as the Yankees faced off against the Red Sox in Boston. In a perfect world, neither of these two annoying big-money teams would do well, but when you can more or less buy your way into the playoffs every single year, that’s not really likely.
And yes, I’m from New England, and I realize that not liking the Sawx is tantamount to blasphemy in these parts. Oh well, go Cardinals!
Anyhow, last night’s game featured a lot to talk about in regards to music.
If you watched any of the pregame, you probably saw Dr. Dre, decked out in a personalized Sox jersey, taking batting practice and promoting his custom Red Sox Beats headphones. But the interesting news came when he was being interviewed alongside record executive Jimmy Iovine. When asked which song they would suggest a batter use as his at-bat music, they both said “Under Pressure” which is an as yet unreleased song by Dre and Jay-Z, presumably off Dre’s Detox album, which has long been talked about but still has not seen the light of day. But the way Iovine described the song made it seem like it’s completely finished. Perhaps, then, we’ll get a firm release date sometime in the near future? I hope so.
Detox Delayed Until 2011
We’re going to have to wait a bit longer for Dr. Dre’s new album, Detox.
Dre has told Slam Online that he’s too busy with other artist’s music to release his own. He went on to inform Slam Online that we’ll probably hear something in a year or so.
So, Detox in 2011? Part of me is over Dre in the same sense that I’m over Eminem and even over Snoop. Sure, they can produce, but everything else they throw out there has just been, well, blah.
Detox would be Dr. Dre’s first release since 1999’s album, 2001. Dre previewed some of his new material in a commercial for Dr Pepper. I’m pretty sure I yawned during that commercial.
